For millennia, Mediterranean red coral has been highly coveted. Remnants of red coral have been discovered even in Neolithic tombs! In antiquity, it was believed to possess almost supernatural healing powers. Greek mythology suggests it sprang from the blood that flowed from the severed head of Medusa by Perseus. For a long time, red coral served as a form of currency, not just around the Mediterranean but particularly in Marseille, a hub for its export. This invertebrate animal, forming colonies of thousands of white individuals called polyps, thrives in rocky seabeds (at depths ranging from 5 to 700 meters).
